The Education Attorney for College and University Special Needs Students.

Two common situations arise when a college or university student needs the assistance of an education or special needs attorney.

The first involves students with “hidden” disabilities, the second, students with disabilities whose special needs are not being met. Below are examples of these situations…

Hidden Disabilities
From kindergarten through high school, schools are required to seek-out disabled students (commonly referred to as “child find”). At the university and college level, however, the student must “self-identify” and register as a student with a disability and self-advocate for him or herself.

If you have a hidden disability, such as depression, anxiety or a learning disability, you will likely not be aware of the issue at the time of enrollment. When the demands of college life, study requirements and other factors begin to weigh on you, you can feel paralyzed by shame or fear, inadequate because of the offers of others to help you, and struggling just to keep pace at the lowest level. The result is that you may be facing a dismissal or expulsion proceeding.

Special Needs Not Being Met
In other situations, you may have followed the process of registering as a student with a disability, but your college or university fails to provide you with the necessary auxiliary aids and services. In situations like this, Lana L. Traynor, LLC will work directly with the appropriate officials, on your behalf, to ensure that you receive the required services.

Your Unique Situation
When you have our team on your side we’ll always consider your unique situation in every move we make. You’ll never be judged or criticized. We will, however, talk straight with you, because we believe you deserve honest and open communication. We’ll analyze your specific situation and each specific fact pattern and advise you about the interplay of relevant student codes of conduct, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).
